How do you know if it makes sense to connect the dots on a plot graph

You can convince yourself by computing the coordinates of intermediate points. If they continute to lie along a smooth curve through all points, then it makes sense. If the location of the points oscillates wildly, which can happen, then it does not make sense to connect the dots.
