Context and Significance
Gender-based violence (GBV) manifests in various forms, including emotional manipulation, intimidation, and sexual assault, and it remains a critical issue in universities worldwide. Recent data from the World Health Organization (2023) highlights the detrimental impacts of GBV on students’ academic performance, campus safety, and overall mental health. In South Africa, the alarmingly high prevalence of GBV among university students emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive research to uncover its root causes (Smith & Jones, 2023). This study aims to explore the institutional, sociocultural, and economic factors contributing to the persistence of gender-based violence in higher education environments.
