                How do you know when to put roman numerals into formulas of binary compounds?

    Whenever the element is multivalent, that is, has more than one valence, put the roman numbers in the NAME, not formula  as in 
copper(II)nitrate Cu(NO3)2
tin(IV) sulfide SnS2
    
copper(II)nitrate Cu(NO3)2
tin(IV) sulfide SnS2
