The derivative is
1+ 8/x^3
Just add the derivatives of the two separate terms: x and -4/x^2.

Wait I think I got it
The equation can be written as x-4x^-2
so d/dx(x)=1
and d/dx(-4x^-2)= -2(-4)(x^-2-1)
which is 8x^-3
d/dx(x-4/x^2)= 1+8x^-3
correct?
