Para-verbal communication is about how we use our voice to send messages, like the tone, pitch, and speed of our speech. It's more about how we say things than what we say. According to Andrie (1999), the main parts of this type of communication include the way we change our voice's tone, volume, and speed.
For teachers, having a good voice is very important. When speaking for long periods, it's best to use a pleasant voice that is easy to listen to. A natural voice that fits your personality, along with a nice tone, works well when teaching one-on-one or in small groups. It's also helpful to speak at a comfortable speed—not too fast or too slow (Babonea & Munteanu, 2012).
When talking to large groups, your voice should be strong but not too loud. It’s important that your voice has feelings and doesn't sound flat. You should also make sure to speak loudly enough for everyone to hear you, depending on the size of the group. To have a strong speaking voice, practice is key, and teachers should aim to improve their voice over time.
