Most volcanoes are located at plate boundaries. This includes both convergent boundaries, where one tectonic plate is subducted beneath another, and divergent boundaries, where plates move apart and magma rises to create new crust. While some volcanoes can occur in the middle of tectonic plates (such as the Hawaiian Islands), the majority are concentrated along these boundaries. Many of the world's volcanoes are also found in oceanic areas, particularly along mid-ocean ridges.
