At the end of each module, you will get a chance to do writing that YOU want to do. For these choice writing assignments, you can write about anything you want (school appropriate of course) and in any form you want. For example, you could write a short story, a poem, a play, a piece of flash fiction, an essay, a reflection, a letter, a comic strip.

The rule is: IT HAS TO INCLUDE WRITING and be meaningful.

The goal of choice writing is to get you to write for YOU and to enjoy writing while at the same time practicing your writing skills.

Your Task:

Pick a topic to write about. The school appropriate sky’s the limit. Need suggestions for what to write? Look at some suggestions here.

Pick the form of writing you want to use. Are you feeling reflective? Poetic? Dramatic? Artistic? Look at my examples above.

Write! MAKE A COPY and do your choice writing assignment in the template attached to this assignment. Reach out to me for help if you need it! This should be at least one FULL page (12 pt. Font, double spaced) OR 2 complete paragraphs (7-8 complete sentences in each paragraph).

Make sure your writing is MEANINGFUL. You have a lot of freedom in how you write, but make sure whatever it is that it is meaningful to you and school appropriate. You could write a personal reflection about something or someone important to you, you could try writing poetry, you could try writing a script, you could write/design a comic strip, a letter to one of your teacher or someone you admire, etc. It just has to have meaning!

Title: A Letter to My Future Self

Dear Future Me,

Hey there! I hope you’re doing well and that life has turned out to be as amazing as you hoped it would be. I’m writing this letter in eighth grade, and there’s so much swirling around in my mind right now. I wanted to take a moment to capture my thoughts and feelings today, so I can look back and see how far I’ve come.

First, I want to remind you about how much you love to write. You spend hours scribbling stories and poems in your notebook, and sometimes it feels like the words are bursting to escape. I hope you’ve never lost that spark! Writing allows you to express yourself in ways you never thought possible, and I hope you’re still finding joy in it. I also hope you’ve kept exploring different genres and styles. Remember that time you decided to try writing a play? Even if it was just for fun, it was a great experience!

Now, let’s talk about friendships. Eighth grade feels like a roller coaster ride, doesn't it? You’ve had your ups and downs with friends, and I know it can be hard sometimes. I hope you’ve surrounded yourself with people who lift you up and support you. I hope you’ve learned the importance of being true to yourself and that friendships should be about love and respect. I want you to remember to cherish the memories you’re making now, even the silly ones, because they shape who you are.

As you read this, I hope you have achieved some of the dreams you had at this age. Have you traveled to cool places? Have you chased after that crazy ambition of becoming an author or a filmmaker? Whatever path you choose, I hope you’re following your heart and not letting fear hold you back. Life is too short, and you deserve to chase your dreams with all you’ve got!

Lastly, I hope you’ve stayed connected with family. It can be easy to get caught up in your own life but don’t forget to take time for those who matter. They’ve supported you all along the way, and I hope you continue to show them love and gratitude.

As I finish this letter, I’m filled with excitement for your future. I can't wait to see where this journey takes you! Remember to always stay curious, keep learning, and never stop writing.

With lots of love and encouragement,
