At the end of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763. This treaty had significant implications for the territorial landscape of North America. As a result of the war and the treaty:
- France ceded most of its North American territories to Britain, including Canada and all lands east of the Mississippi River.
- Spain, which had allied with France during the war, ceded Florida to Britain but received the vast territory of Louisiana west of the Mississippi River from France as compensation.
- France retained a few small islands in the Caribbean but lost its major territorial holdings on the continent.
The outcome of the war and the subsequent treaty set the stage for increasing tensions between Britain and its American colonies, ultimately contributing to the American Revolution.
