m = 5

What I'd advise is to balance the equation. What you do on one side of the equal sign, do it on the other.
9/2m-8= -5.5 + 4m
9/2m = 4 1/2m
4 1/2m -8= -5.5 + 4m
Add 8 on both sides
4 1/2m = 2.5 + 4m
Subtract 4m on both sides
1/2m = 2.5
Multiply 2 on both sides
m=5
