The group that would have had the most potential to improve their social status in New England would be indentured servants. Unlike enslaved Africans, who were bound for life and had very limited rights, indentured servants entered into contracts for a fixed term of years in exchange for passage to the colonies, room, and board. After their terms were completed, they were often able to gain freedom and could potentially acquire land or other means to improve their social status. Business owners also had potential for social mobility, but indentured servants had a clearer path laid out toward eventual improvement of their status.
