In Iran, citizens do elect their president and their legislators (Members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly). However, the supreme leader is not elected directly by the citizens; instead, the Assembly of Experts, which is also elected, is responsible for selecting the supreme leader. Judges are appointed rather than elected.
