The South's economy was in shambles. Soldiers were hungry and tired, and many hadn't been paid. Although the South was winning many battles, they were losing a lot of soldiers, and didn't have a lot of new recruits. In the North, anti-war voices grew louder. Many Union soldiers deserted, simply walking away from the war, and among some units, one-fourth or more of the soldiers deserted.
