If the unknown powder is indeed baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), the student can expect a reaction when performing the vinegar test. When baking soda is mixed with vinegar (acetic acid), a chemical reaction occurs, producing carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate.
The student should observe the following:
-
Fizzing or Bubbling: A noticeable effervescent reaction characterized by the release of gas (carbon dioxide) will occur. This will manifest as bubbling or fizzing.
-
Temperature Change: The reaction may feel slightly cool to the touch, as it is endothermic and absorbs heat.
If the student observes these signs, it is strong evidence that the powder is likely baking soda. If there is no fizzing or bubbling, the powder is probably not baking soda.
