The district's changes were C controversial.
Faced with reduced state funding, South Dakota's Irene-Wakonda School District attempted to cut costs in an unusual way: Friday classes were cancelled. Administrators extended the other school days by a half-hour apiece to compensate for the loss. They insisted that reducing class time was better than the alternatives, such as having fewer teachers or eliminating programs. But other administrators asserted that the measures would do little to alleviate the district's financial problems, as the schools would still have many of the same expenses as before. Many parents were concerned that their children's education would suffer. And some educators contended that fewer days in school would put students at a disadvantage in today's global economy.
