How is popular sovereignty present in US Federal government?

I know popular sovereignty means the people have the primary source of governmental authority (it also had to do with slaves states and how a state registered their vote as a slave state or not a slave state...

All federal officials and laws are passed by representatives. I know of no law or action that is taken as a result of a popular citizen vote.
