8x+5y=184, x-y=3

2 answers

Ren this is substitution method and I am so confused
ok here is what i got:
8x+5y=184 (1)
x-y=3 (2)

from equation (1) 8x+5y=184 => 8x=184-5y
x=184-5y/8 call this equation (3)

substitute equation (3) in equation (2)

184-5y/8-y =3
(184/8)-(5y/8)-y=3
(184/8)-(13y/8)=3
(184/8)-3=13y/8
160/8=13y/8
20=13y/8
[cross multiply]
20(8)=13y
160=13y
160/13=y

for y=160/13, substitute in equation (3)

x=184-(5(160/13))/8
x=(184-800/13)/8
x=(1592/13)/8
x=(1592/13) * (1/8)
x=199/13

x=199/13 , y=160/13

If you plug back in these values for x and y in equations 1 and 2, you are suppose to get back the answers there are equal to....
