I think that's history
Since this is not my area of expertise, I searched Google under the key words "civil rights movement" to get this:

In the future, you can find the information you desire more quickly, if you use appropriate key words to do your own search. Also see http://hanlib.sou.edu/searchtools/.

Pros: It gave more equality, and less discrimation to minorities. (give many examples of this, like it made it illegal to ban minorities from doing anything a white person could do.) It gave further meaning to the philosophy that all man (people in general) are created equal and that we should all be treated equally. It stopped willful segregation (separation) of people based on race.
Cons: It further polarized political parties and gave some people a feeling that the government was too controlling. It let civil disobedience, like breaking laws, be OK for people to do if they felt they were justified in doing so for the greater good. (give current examples, such as the killing of abortionist doctors). In some cases it forced integration (making people of different races mix in schools, colleges etc, even if they didn't want to, they lost the power to choose)
