Like fuel for a car, you need calories to function. However, when you take in more calories than you use, they are stored as fat. If you store too much, then this can be a problem.
Since this is not my area of expertise, I searched Google under the key words "<I>calories per day</I>" to get this:
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=calories+per+day&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
This should give you a start.
