Question

jason leaves detroit at 2 pm at a constant speed. he passes ann arbor, 40 mi. from detroit, at 2:50 pm.

express the distance traveled in terms of time elapsed.

i know d=rt. t=50 min. d=40 mi. does that mean the r= 4/5 mi/min. ? but how would u get the answer from there?

I think they want d=(4/5)t, but I'm not sure. You could put t on the x-axis and d on the y-axis and have a line with slope 4/5 which corresponds to the rate. Aside from that, the question is not clearly stated in my opinion.
