They were both among the first agricultural regions and were centered around large rivers in arid lands. Both cultures could provide enough food for their people, thus allowing arts, architecture, and writing to become established.
But they grew up independently with apparently little contact with each other in the early days. Egypt had direct access to the sea while Mesopotamia was mostly landlocked.
