do esterification reactions usually have a high yield of the desired ester?

I don't know how to answer your question; it all depends upon what you call a high yield. I think a typical esterification may be about 65-80%. They reaction can be driven to the right (Le Chatelier's principle) by using an excess of alcohol AND/OR removing the ester by some means.
