Ferdinand Magellan is credited as the first explorer to successfully circumnavigate the Earth. Although he did not complete the journey himself (he was killed in the Philippines), his expedition, which began in 1519 and concluded in 1522, was the first to sail around the globe. The actual completion of the circumnavigation was achieved by Juan Sebastián Elcano, one of Magellan's crew members, who took command after Magellan's death.
