The main form in which carbon dioxide (CO2) is transported in the blood is as bicarbonate ions (HCO3-). About 70% of carbon dioxide is transported in this form.
In addition to bicarbonate, CO2 is also transported dissolved in plasma (about 7%) and bound to hemoglobin (carbaminohemoglobin) in red blood cells (about 23%). This combination of transport methods helps facilitate efficient gas exchange in the body.
