With some people, they may be more open because of the anonymity. Others might express information that merely shows them in a better light. I also think it varies more with the individual than the gender. However, outside the Internet, men are more likely to communicate facts, while women are more likely to express emotions. Could that mean that women would be more honest on the Internet? I don't know.
I also think another variable would be where the information is posted, for example, a site dealing with a specific problem (e.g., cancer) rather than merely a social site. I would expect more honesty in the former.
