Dr. Philip Zazove had to work extra hard while in medical school. Deaf since childhood, he admitted that not being able to hear his teachers was definitely a problem. For example, learning how to perform surgeries was difficult because the surgical masks worn during operations covered his teachers' mouths: Zazove was not able to read their lips. He asked numerous questions in order to learn. His hard work paid off. In 1981, Zazove became the third deaf physician ever to practice in the United States.
