Title: Introduction to Phonics

Objective: Students will learn and practice identifying and sounding out letters and letter combinations to improve their reading and spelling skills.

Materials:
- Letter cards
- Picture cards
- Reading passages
- Phonics worksheets
- Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up (5 minutes):
- Begin by reviewing the alphabet with the students. Have them say the letters in order and then out of order.
- Show them a few letter cards and ask them to identify the letters and say the sounds they make.

Introduction (10 minutes):
- Explain to the students that phonics is the relationship between letters and the sounds they make.
- Show them examples of how different letter combinations can make different sounds (e.g. "ch" says /ch/, "ea" says /ee/).
- Introduce a few new letter combinations and their sounds.

Activity 1: Letter Sound Match (15 minutes):
- Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of letter cards and picture cards.
- Ask the students to match the letter cards to the picture cards that begin with the same sound.
- Walk around and help the students as needed.

Activity 2: Reading Passages (15 minutes):
- Give each student a reading passage with words that contain the phonics skills they have learned.
- Have the students read the passage aloud, sounding out any unfamiliar words using their phonics knowledge.
- Discuss the passage as a class and point out any words that follow the phonics rules.

Activity 3: Phonics Worksheet (10 minutes):
- Distribute a phonics worksheet to each student with exercises on identifying letter sounds and spelling words.
- Have the students work independently on the worksheet, checking their answers as a class afterwards.

Closure (5 minutes):
- Review the phonics skills learned during the lesson and ask the students to share something they found interesting or challenging.
- Remind the students to continue practicing their phonics skills at home by reading and decoding unfamiliar words.

Assessment:
- Observe the students during the activities to assess their ability to identify and sound out letters and letter combinations.
- Review the completed phonics worksheets to check for understanding of the phonics skills taught during the lesson.
