When a man and a woman engage in sexual intercourse, the man's sperm is ejaculated into the woman's vagina. If the woman is ovulating, meaning she is in the fertile period of her menstrual cycle, the sperm may fertilize her egg. The fertilized egg then implants itself into the lining of the woman's uterus, where it begins to grow and develop into a baby. Over the course of approximately nine months, the baby grows and develops inside the woman's womb until it is ready to be born.
