Origin of cultism

1 answer

Cultism, also known as cult violence or campus cultism, originated in Nigeria in the 1950s. It started as a way for students to combat social injustice and political oppression on college campuses. However, over time, it evolved into a violent and dangerous phenomenon characterized by secret societies, initiation rites, and criminal activities.

Some of the earliest cult groups in Nigeria include the Pyrates Confraternity (also known as the National Association of Seadogs), which was established in 1952, and the Buccaneers Confraternity, established in the 1970s. These groups were originally meant to promote social justice and fight against corruption, but they soon became involved in violent clashes with rival cult groups and criminal activities such as armed robbery, drug trafficking, and extortion.

Cultism spread to other countries in Africa and beyond, with similar groups emerging in countries like Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Today, cultism is a major problem on many college campuses in Nigeria and continues to be associated with violence, intimidation, and criminal behavior.
