Title: A Comparison of Context-Based and Whole Language Approaches in Reading Instruction

Abstract:

This study compares the effectiveness of context-based and whole language approaches in reading instruction. The context-based approach emphasizes the use of contextual clues and real-world examples to help students understand and interpret texts, while the whole language approach emphasizes the importance of exposing students to authentic texts and encouraging them to make meaning from the text as a whole.

The study involved a sample of elementary school students who were randomly assigned to either a context-based or whole language reading program. Both groups received the same amount of instruction and were assessed on their reading comprehension skills before and after the program.

Results showed that students in the context-based group demonstrated significant improvements in their ability to use contextual clues to infer meaning, while students in the whole language group showed significant improvements in their ability to make meaning from the text as a whole. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in overall reading comprehension scores.

These findings suggest that both context-based and whole language approaches have their own strengths and can be effective in improving reading comprehension skills. Educators may benefit from incorporating aspects of both approaches into their reading instruction to create a more comprehensive and balanced approach to teaching reading comprehension.
