Pneumonia is caused by a variety of factors, most commonly bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The most common cause of pneumonia is the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae, but other bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae can also cause the infection. Viruses such as influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and adenovirus can also lead to pneumonia. In some cases, pneumonia can be caused by inhaling food, liquids, vomit, or chemicals into the lungs. Additionally, certain factors can increase the risk of developing pneumonia, such as weakened immune system, chronic lung diseases, smoking, and old age.
