Joseph, one of Jacob's sons, had been sold into slavery by his brothers and had risen to a position of power in Egypt. He invited his family to come and live in Egypt where there was food and shelter. The Israelites settled in Egypt, eventually growing in number and becoming enslaved by the Egyptians.
