The diagram shows an energy pyramid for the field ecosystem
Hawks snakes mice grass
Why does available energy decrease towards the top of the pyramid
More plants exist that can be eaten by herbivores
Humans use most of the energy available in the ecosystem
Organisms and each trophic level lose heat to the environment
Animals in the higher traffic levels are more likely to catch diseases

The available energy decreases towards the top of the energy pyramid because organisms at each trophic level lose energy in the form of heat to the environment. This means that not all the energy obtained from consuming organisms at lower trophic levels is transferred to higher trophic levels. Additionally, as you move up the energy pyramid, there is less overall energy available as some energy is lost in the processes of digestion, movement, and growth. This results in less energy being available for organisms at higher trophic levels.
