When Creon sends Antigone and Ismene away, he tells the guards to take them to a secluded place and bury them alive. Creon says, "Lock them up in the vault of rock, the tomb of their ancestors. Leave them alone there, and let fate take care of them in the afterlife" (Sophocles, Antigone, lines 570-572). This shows that Creon has decided to punish the sisters severely for defying his edict and burying their brother Polynices.
