A teacher opens a window on a cold day. Does air cooler air move towards warmer temperature move towards cooler air? A student takes the temperature of a bottle of liquid water and a tub filled with ice. The student then placed the bottle of liquid water and a tub filled with ice. After 15 minutes what do you think will happen to the temperature of the ice? What do you think will happen to the temperature of the water?

1 answer

In the first scenario, cooler air will move towards the warmer temperature as air tends to move from areas of high pressure to low pressure. So, in this case, the cooler air from outside will move into the classroom through the open window.

In the second scenario, after 15 minutes, the temperature of the ice will likely decrease further as it absorbs more heat from the liquid water. The water will also cool down as heat is transferred from the water to the ice, causing the temperature of both the water and the ice to eventually reach an equilibrium at a lower temperature.
