The big bang theory says that the universe started really small and then expanded a lot really quickly. This happened about 13.8 billion years ago. As the universe expanded, it cooled down and formed stars, galaxies, and everything else that we see today. So, basically, the big bang theory explains how the universe began and how it has changed and grown over time.
