Zheng He's explorations began in the early 15th century during the reign of the Yongle Emperor in China. The emperor ordered the construction of an enormous fleet of ships, known as the Treasure Ships, which were under the command of Zheng He. His expeditions were initially aimed at establishing Chinese dominance in the Indian Ocean and showcasing the power and wealth of the Ming Dynasty. The first voyage of Zheng He set sail in 1405 and consisted of hundreds of ships and thousands of men, embarking on a journey that would take them to Southeast Asia, India, the Arabian Peninsula, and eventually as far as the eastern coast of Africa.
