While merchants, soldiers, navigators, and other immigrant groups came to Texas willingly in search of riches and opportunities, free Black citizens were forcibly brought to Texas through the transatlantic slave trade. Despite the differences in their reasons for coming to Texas, both groups faced challenges upon arrival, such as adapting to a new environment and facing discrimination. Like other immigrant groups, free Black citizens also sought a better life in Texas, albeit under vastly different circumstances. Despite their varying experiences, all groups shared the common goal of seeking a brighter future in Texas.
