A Simple Flower Story
by Trey Loker

1Shaking her head slowly, Sarai stares at the empty lot just a block away from her house. Soda cans, potato chip bags, and discarded cardboard cover the ground. She walks across to a collection of tin cans and kicks at them in frustration. Underneath, she discovers a little blue flower attempting to grow. Its petals are crushed, but Sarai believes that this flower has a chance to make it. How many more beautiful flowers are under all of this trash, needing help? This gave Sarai an idea.

2Realizing she cannot go through with her idea alone, she sprints home and grabs her phone from the charging station. Sarai’s mother, cutting out nature pictures for her next project, gives her a confused look as Sarai sprints for the back deck. After a few phone calls, Sarai rummages through the garage for a wheelbarrow and trash bags.

3An hour later, the empty lot is full of activity. Eight of Sarai’s closest friends can be seen picking up soda cans, potato chip bags, and discarded cardboard from the field. After collecting a total of eight trash bags, Sarai returns home pushing the wheelbarrow with a smile on her face. She also has a picture of a yellow and pink flower in her pocket to give to her mother.

A Simple Flower Poem
by Trey Loker

A flower buds its petals of pink.
It rises to the sky.
Glowing and coloring the grass,
a light wind may pass,
and cool water flows to drink.

A flower buds its petals of yellow.
It’s covered by trash.
Coughing and wheezing a lot,
the wind cannot stop,
the trash from killing this fellow.

A flower buds its petals of blue.
It’s crushed by cans.
Without provocation,
it’s freed from the suffocation
by a woman who loves so true.

What common theme do both the story and poem share?

The Water Fountain
L. Han

Tabia woke up early one morning. There would be no school that day. The entire village was celebrating. For the past two months, one person from each family had been working to build a road that would link their village to other areas in the small African country of Malawi. The purpose of this road was to allow the big drilling trucks to come to the village and begin working on constructing a well.

Before this day, the people in Tabia's village had had to get their water from the river that flowed a mile away. Tabia's mother carried her large bucket back and forth from the river three times every day. Her back ached from carrying the heavy load, and her bare feet had grown hard and calloused.

But today, everything would change. Tabia put on her best dress and rushed outside to meet the other villagers. In a big group, they ran to the road and watched as the drilling trucks made their way across the land.

A few hours later, everyone exploded into screams of joy and laughter as a great fountain of water gushed up into the air. The children ran to play in the water that fell around them like rain. Tabia jumped and danced in celebration. Now the village would have fresh, clean water available at any time, and her mother would finally have a chance to rest. Tabia would never forget this magical moment.

Stream of Gold
L Woods

Jonas Smith had been panning for gold since the gold rush began, and after two years, he finally found some, just enough to fill his mind with thoughts of riches.

With just a little more, he thought, I could buy a large house and fancy new clothes!

Alas, there was no more gold to be had, and Jonas gave up hope of being rich. Sadly, he gathered the gold dust and small nuggets he had found and put them in a sack.

“Excuse me,” said a gentleman in a fine suit who had suddenly appeared, “did you find much gold here?”

Jonas shook his head. “Just a little, but I would sure like to find more.”

“I’ll make you a deal,” said the gentleman. “There’s a stream just beyond that hill that has gold pouring from it. I got my fill and don’t need any more. If you give me your sack of gold, I will sign over my section of the stream to you.” He scribbled something on a document and handed it to Jonas and said, “It will make you a rich man.”

Then the gentleman brought out a handkerchief full of gold dust and announced, “This came out of the stream just yesterday.”

“Sold!” cried Jonas, who happily turned over his little sack and made his way to the stream.

Jonas never saw any gold in that stream, and he never saw the finely dressed gentleman, either

Passage 2
Lost Dinner
L. Han

The grizzly bear family stood in the icy water at the top of a mountain waterfall, catching salmon for their dinner. The youngest bear, Bo, spent the day playing in the water while his sister Becca and his parents fished.

As the sun began to set, Bo became hungry.

“Hey, Becca!” he called, “It looks like you caught lots of fish today. Mind if I have some for my supper?”

“No, son,” their father stepped in, “your sister worked hard for those fish. We are going home, and I want you to stay here until you’ve caught your dinner.”

Feeling like life was very unfair, Bo said goodbye to his family and went back to the falls.

After many tries, Bo at last caught a small salmon, not much bigger than his paw. He was about to eat it when he saw two much bigger salmon swimming upstream. They would make a fine supper, he thought. So he dropped the little salmon in the water, and it quickly swam away. He swiped his paw again and again through the water, but the big salmon were far too strong and fast. Bo went home hungry that night.

A gust of wind nearly blew off Mr. Wallace’s cowboy hat as he coaxed another horse into the barn. He had few helpers today, as he was preparing for the storm to come. Most of them were on a roundup, moving the cattle to another pasture where they would be sheltered from the winds. His 13-year-old son, Nate, was pitching in to help, trying to calm the horses so none of them would bolt.

Mrs. Wallace came out of the ranch house just then and shouted over the wind, “Looks like there’s a fence that needs repair at the bottom of the south 40!”

Mr. Wallace nodded and then frowned as his wife went back inside. He and Nate stepped into the barn to get out of the wind. “I have no one to send to fix that fence,” he said, “which means we could lose some cattle.”

“I can go do it,” Nate volunteered. “I’ve seen you repair dozens of fences!”

“Are you sure, son?” his father asked doubtfully. “It can be a tough job, and even harder in these winds.”

Nate convinced his father he could do the job, and Mr. Wallace watched proudly as his son packed tools in a saddle bag, mounted his horse, and took off.

When the boy came back, two hours later, and announced that the fence was mended, Mr. Wallace patted him firmly on the back. “That’s my boy,” he declared, “or I should say, my young man.”

The Future Queen
L. Hernandez

At the palace, the royal council gathered to discuss the day’s decisions. With the king’s guidance, the council passed laws to benefit the kingdom. The king could not join the council as he was very sick. He knew that his days left as king were few, so he sent for his eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice.

“What is it you want, Father? I was just about to gather my friends for a picnic.”

“Not today, Beatrice,” her father said with a serious tone. “I am too sick to attend the council meeting, so you must go in my place. In fact, from now on, you will lead the meetings. I have taught you much of what I know, and you are ready.”

“But Father, I am still just a child! Can’t you have someone else do it?”

“You are next in line to the throne, young lady,” the king said sternly, “and it’s time that you started acting like a queen.”

“Yes, Father,” Beatrice said, and she went to break the news to her friends.

Beatrice wanted very much to make her father proud, so at the council meeting, she listened well and gave her best advice.

When it was over, the Duke of Jasper, who headed the meeting, told the king, “You have one very adult little princess who will make a fine queen.”

This delighted the king, filling his heart with happiness.
