x(x - 1)(x + 1). Would you FOIL the parenthesis first or multiply the x by (x-1) first?

It doesn't matter. You will get the same answer. It will go a bit faster if you recognize that
(x - 1)(x + 1)= x^2 -1
and then multiply that by x.
