When gummy bears are placed in distilled water, they will absorb the water through a process called osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane, in this case, the gummy bear. As the gummy bear absorbs the water, it will swell and increase in size. This process will continue until the concentration of water inside and outside the gummy bear is equal, at which point the gummy bear will reach its maximum size and become saturated with water.
