The Night Sky
I went walking with my family
on a trail in the park.
We had to hurry because
it was getting close to being dark.
We wound through the woods,
looking low and looking high,
until we found the ideal spot
to gaze at the sky.
The night was calm and clear-
great for looking at the stars.
With help from our telescope,
maybe we would see Mars.
I sat down next to Dad
and put the telescope in place.
We soon began to count the stars,
but it turned into a race.
I counted to one hundred
and decided to stop there.
My brother can count higher,
so it became a bit unfair.
The stars were shining brightly
like lights across the sky.
"It is so beautiful," Dad said,
"it almost makes me cry."
There are pictures in the stars,
and I can name a few.
I can see the Big Dipper and
the Little Dipper too.
To peer up in the darkness
and see the sky at night
made me never want to leave.
It was such a beautiful sight.
