The main ideas of the compromises were not successful in balancing free and slave states because the conflicts over slavery continued to grow. For example, even though the Compromise of 1850 tried to keep the balance by admitting California as a free state, it also allowed for the Fugitive Slave Act which angered many in the North. Additionally, the Kansas-Nebraska Act led to violent clashes between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups in Kansas, showing that the compromise did not create peace. Overall, the compromises did not effectively address the underlying issues of slavery in the country, leading to further tensions and eventually the Civil War.
