Secretin is a hormone that is produced in the intestine in response to the presence of acidic chyme (partially digested food) in the duodenum. It stimulates the pancreas to release bicarbonate-rich pancreatic juice, which helps to neutralize the acidic chyme entering the small intestine from the stomach. Secretin also inhibits the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach and stimulates the production of bile in the liver.
