Plessy v Ferguson, which established the doctrine of "separate but equal," upheld the segregation of public facilities based on race. However, the reality in America was far from equal. One example of this disparity can be seen in the images on the Double Bubble Map, where the segregated water fountains for white and colored people are clearly not equal in terms of cleanliness and condition. Another example is the segregated seating on buses, where the facilities for white passengers were often more comfortable and well-maintained than those for colored passengers. Overall, the ruling of "separate but equal" did not accurately reflect the unequal treatment and discrimination that minority groups faced in America at the time.
