Question

The U.S. is Falling Behind in Education
Evidence shows that the United States is not investing in human capital as other industrial nations. In other words, it is not putting efforts in the economic value of the abilities and qualities of human labor that result in productivity, like education. To put more simply, the United States is not putting in efforts that ensure that the students are competitive and productive enough as global students.

Only one generation ago, the United States ranked first in the world in higher education. Various tests and comparative data show that the country’s status is in danger. The country has failed to improve at the same pace as some other countries. Current global ranking of the United States is 14th in the 25-34 age group. In addition, the enrollment rate of students is 62%.

Various tests have compared the scores of 15-year-old students across industrial nations. According to some tests that measure global competitiveness, the scores of students in the U.S. have stopped dropping. While the decline of the scores have stopped, there aren’t any signs of improvement. In other tests, the U.S. students’ math scores haven’t changes since 2003, and the same applies to science scores since 2006. In a survey of students’ math skills in 30 industrialized countries, the U.S. ranks near the bottom. After 2020, the U.S. ranked 10th in its World Competitiveness Center report by IMD. It is to be noted that the U.S. ranked first in 2018. These various data and surveys that show the decline of U.S. education in world ranking is concerning.

All in all, the future of the U.S. is compromised if students in other countries have surpassed this country’s young ones' scoring abilities in important subjects. In a future that relies heavily on developments in math and science, the U.S. needs its young students sharper and more educated than ever.
