Question

Throughout this unit, you will learn to write a research paper. A research paper is a long essay based on factual information taken from reliable sources. A research paper can be about almost any subject. You can write a research paper to explore the cultural context of a literary work, to analyze the impact of a scientific discovery, to organize information about a historical period, and so on.

Despite the almost infinite possibilities for content, though, a good research paper needs to adhere to specific rules. A research paper:

includes a clear topic sentence that states the main idea of the paper
develops the main idea in supporting paragraphs that contain only relevant information
is based on reliable sources
uses quotations and cites the sources correctly
ends in a concluding paragraph that restates the main idea of the research paper
this reserch paper will be based on a landmark
the paper will be about what to do there sights to see and much much more the paper will end up being around 5 pages long it will also include a walkthrough of the landmark to make the reader able to visualize the landmark as if they are walking through it the landmark is the south pacific island of bora-bora located in French Polynesia, bora-bora is an enchanting blend of verdant peaks, coral reefs, and a blue lagoon

Answer
Prewriting: Gathering Information
A photo shows a woman with a magnifying glass in front of her eye leaning forward and looking at a laptop screen. In the previous lesson, you wrote a research proposal and received feedback from your teacher. In this lesson, you will start gathering information efficiently from well-selected sources.

What is the best way to start gathering resources? When you gather resources, remember these key words:

efficiency: Online search engines and databases can flood you with information if you don’t know how to input the right data. You need to learn to use search engines and databases efficiently, so that you can access accurate and useful information quickly.
reliability: Learn to spot whether a source is reliable, or whether it is biased or even inaccurate. Sources such as encyclopedias and textbooks are inherently reliable, whereas sources such as blogs and online comments will always need a double check with a reliable source.
variety: A good research paper relies on a variety of sources. If you rely on too few sources, then your paper will seem unsupported.
In this lesson, you will start gathering information for your research paper. Remember to maintain a variety of primary and secondary sources both printed and online. You can gather information from encyclopedias, books, periodicals, and other media at your school or public library. You can also look for online publications, newspaper articles, and other materials on the Internet.

To help you keep track of your resources, write down the author, title, and medium—including the Internet address for Web sites and the section and page number for newspaper articles—of all the sources you think might be useful. Then notate what kind of information each resource provides. By doing so, you will be able to locate information quickly when you begin drafting your paper and when you complete your Works Cited page.
