First of all, not all plants require pollination. Plants in the spermatophyte phylum may require or allow it, because they have evolved to enable a sexual type of reproduction. Many spermatophyte species can also reproduce asexually, by vegetative propagation (cuttings) or growth from spreading root stock (as in an aspen grove). Higher plant and animal forms tend to require pollination, perhaps because it enhances natural selection processes.
