"So I thought x+y=56"
Correct. Call this equation (1)
"... there are 3 times as many homes available for the 2nd floor(y) plan than the first(x)."
y=3x ......(2)
Substitute (2) into equation (1) and solve for x.
I need help,my example: The sales representative say there are two floor plans available 56 total houses. Use x for floor plan 1 and y for floor plan 2 then write an equation that illistrates the situation. So I thought x+y=56, then sales rep. says there is 3 times as many homes available for the 2nd floor plan than the first. Write an equation using the same variables. I will have to solve them with substitution method in the next question (which I understand) I can not figure out what the second equation should be? It does not make sense if the eguation is x+3y=56 cant solve them with substitution method then.
