Under the Oregon Donation Land Act of 1850, settlers needed to meet certain requirements in order to become landowners:
1. Settlers had to be American citizens or declare their intent to become citizens.
2. Settlers had to be at least 18 years old or the head of a family.
3. Settlers had to live on the land for a certain period of time, typically between 4 to 5 years.
4. Settlers had to cultivate and improve the land.
5. Settlers had to file a claim for the land they wanted to receive under the act.
Once these requirements were met, settlers could receive up to 320 acres of free land in Oregon.
