Metaphase is a stage of cell division (mitosis) in which the chromosomes align along the metaphase plate (equatorial plate) of the cell. This alignment ensures that the sister chromatids are correctly divided between the two daughter cells during the subsequent stages of cell division. During metaphase, the spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of the chromosomes, allowing them to be moved and aligned properly. Once all the chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate, the cell is ready to proceed to the next stage of cell division, anaphase.
